students on a dock by a pond in a forest preserve

Our 6th grade students recently visited the Spring Valley Nature Center in Schaumburg and had an amazing and fun learning opportunity. Here's what one student had to say about their experience:

"This field trip, we first went on a little walk to our first spot/activity! We all got little wooden cards. We all took turns sharing what our cards contribute to the ecosystem and after we all shared we had to put all the cards in order in a circle form. Something we learned from this activity is that every single part in the ecosystem is equally as important.

Next, we all went to a different spot, the wet lands. We all got to see a baby blue heron. It was fantastic! When we got on the dock we all spotted something in the water, a frog! It was so mesmerizing seeing everything during this time.

After that we headed to the grasslands area and for our next activity we all got in groups of two and got cards of a type of flower. We all had to look for the type of flower we had on the card. It took a while, but eventually we found most of them. This part was so fun! We went on another walk back to go to our last activity. When we got there we got to try and find bugs! There was this shallow river that we saw. It was amazing, and cool! We spent at least 15 minutes trying to find bugs and just exploring. We found a worm, and I found a little roly polie!
