No Excuses University
Our initiative began in August 2005 when a team of our staff attended a workshop given by Mr. Damen Lopez. He shared the success at his school as they created a “No Excuses” philosophy for their building. The term No Excuses University was coined by Turn Around Schools Consulting. It began at Los Pen University, a struggling school in San Diego. This school struggled, their community was predominately low income, many students spoke English as second language, and their test scores were dismal. However, the principal at that school told staff that if you don’t think all students can learn, you don’t belong at this school. They began talking about how they could support their students and prepare them for their future. They wanted to be sure all of their students knew they had the opportunity to go to college. Their mission states “We are committed to creating a school that knows no limits to the academic success of each student.” The school, Los Pen, turned itself around and test scores rose dramatically.
Our staff loved what they heard! We were hooked! Our team invited Mr. Lopez to our school to share his stories with the rest of our staff. After applying in 2005 we received the good news that we were accepted to be part of this Nationally Recognized network of schools. Mr. Lopez stated, “Your school was selected because your school shows true dedication to holding students, parents, and staff to the highest expectations possible. Your deep commitment to college readiness through the NEU model will continue to spotlight your school as a tremendous place for students.”
We believe our job is to promote college readiness at the elementary school level.
